//binder covers//

after two years of stuffing my latin handouts into my backpack and losing them just in time for the next class, i succumbed to organization (or rather overcame my laziness) and decided to get myself a binder.

i came home from office depot with a clean, fresh, sparkling new one under my arm but the artist within scoffed at the plain green plastic surface and begged to embelish it a bit … therefore out came my pencils, black pens, and paper.

and thus began the 3-year-tradition of drawing binder covers for each new school year.

a couple of weeks ago a flood (a real one with water) invaded our basement – and specifically my room – and it ended up destroying some of my old binder artwork stored (unfortunately) beneath my bed.

a while ago, however, i had made a pinterest board with some dorkily edited pictures of the now dearly departed so i can share my old designs as well as my new ones πŸ™‚

latin! the very first drawing – the prototype that began it all. it was so fun to create that i decided to do it to the rest of my binders πŸ™‚

my biology binder survived the school year with quite a few scars … only to perish by flood. fortunately i had this old photo – forgive the lack of aesthetics πŸ™‚

for a couple of binders I made a design for the little sleeve on the side. these were so hard to get under the plastic but they ended up looking so adorable that i decided it was worth the hassle. besides, i had more time on my hands in those days. *sighs and thinks of my lost childhood* πŸ˜‰

american history! this was my least favorite design because the flags were so awkward. the side sleeve, however, has cuteness to spare πŸ™‚ excuse the babyish stickers everywhere πŸ˜›

chemistry and pre-calculus followed in an almost-fatal duo which threatened to destroy my sanity – but yours truly came out of the year alive (and sleep-deprived).

also – friendly reminder that mistakes are A-okay and make your art even more interesting and fun. Notice the missing (or rather microscopic!) “r” in chemistry πŸ˜›

a year later and slightly more mature in the art of high-schooling, i present to you my two latest binder cover drawings.

i feel that my binder artwork has evolved quite a bit over the years – in a positive way – and i’m happy to finally share my designs.

may school, or work, or life treat you well this fall!

  2. These. are. FABULOUS! Okay, I don’t get it – you come over to my blog and have such wonderful things to say about my simple artwork, and sometimes some not-so-positive things to say about your own abilities, but you can do this?! It’s just a hop, skip and about five bottles of nail polish to get to what I’m doing from where you are, truly! Cut yourself a HEAP of slack – these covers are awesome, and you’ve got talent. πŸ™‚ In high school we were all given these planners at the beginning of the year. Most people would just chuck ’em in their lockers, but my friends and I always plastered ours with graffiti, song lyrics, or song lyrics written out in graffiti. I loved that tradition.

    1. I love that tradition too! take something basic and make it into a little piece of yourself.
ahh your talent in something special … being able to manipulate tiny little brushes and slippery nail polish into some of the most gorgeous designs I’ve ever seen … it blows me away. creating art on such a small scale wows me every time. I’ll never not be shocked at how exquisite your designs are ❀️
but thank you thank you thank you! I really appreciate the lovely things people have said… I need the extra motivation to keep going now that school is half strangling me!
I hope you have a wonderful week!

    1. Thank you thank you! It’s been a lot of fun doing these every year in preparation for classes πŸ™‚
It wasn’t fun waking up to 2 inches of water in my room, but we did end up getting brand new carpet which helped make up for the hassle πŸ˜‰
Thank you for reading and leaving such a nice comment!
