perhaps i found the lost piece of every dreamer’s soul

10/13/19

the moon the moon the moon – she’s gorgeous, gorgeous tonight. she caught my eye as i was driving home; sitting in the backseat with my knees pushed up against the chair in front of me; and she held them in her spell the rest of the way home.

she was hidden at first behind a drapery of funereal clouds streaking across her and distorting the full roundness of her shape before blurring back into the grey sobriety of the night sky.

but even the grey clouds – still mourning the death of the week – could not hide the round, warm, waxing buxom glow of the moon. she emerged golden, secure and unmoving in the sky – like a mother – watching and pouring her warmth onto those children of hers who will only look upwards – yellow and sumptous and wholesome. she was large, too – larger than i had ever seen her save once when she hung blood-red and bloated over new york city on a winter night.

but this was the milky liquid golden sister of the blood-red moon – both being unnatural in their giantess roles – but one in a hellish aura of foreboding while the other smiled kindly on humanity.

i watched her as she swelled and swam up the sky, never straying from her upwards course as buildings and trees and telephone lines melted away in unison with the miles until i reached home. i watched her as i climbed out of the car and walked into my house, and she hung low in the sky, barely above the silhouette of the roof.

i thought about her as i spent the evening, and when i returned to her hours later, she wasn’t the same. she was brilliant, crystal now; she had lost most of her swollen golden aura. instead she was blindingly white and bright, so bright, so bright.

she made the night sky bluer than i ever remembered it, and the stars more subject and worshipful to her majesty than i ever remembered them.

i left her so – queenly and white – high up in the sky, and she left a bit of her midnight witchcraft in me.

she shone a bit too brightly into my eyes – and i lingered a bit too long in her gaze – until my eyes swam in a kaleidescopic blur of violet and blue. she blinded a part of my soul, and i’m afraid i’ll never be able to see there again.

but perhaps it was only a righteous toll she exacted from any human being who dared accost her naked enchanted splendour on this witching night. perhaps many souls were captured inside the diamond rays of her light.

perhaps they’re all stars now, celestial beings of their own, more subjects of her majesty the moon.

  3. i couldn’t have described the comfort yet sheer beauty of the moon and its role as this guiding light. something that you can look at again and again with that same expression of awe. i loveddd that personification of the moon’s “golden sister”. i don’t know how it’s possible, but your writing gets more and more beautiful with each post! jul… ur a wizard. well, technically a witch but PISH-POSH. this was marvelousss. keep writing <3<3<3
